Orlando Science Center

• The Orlando Science Center showcases several branches of science from mechanics to biology and applied technology. 

• There are a variety of themed exhibits. 

• Among the top favorites is "Kids Town". Kids Town is available to children under 48 inches tall with stimulating interactive exhibits. 

• There are also laser shows and large format films at the Cine Dome.

• In addition to the exhibit galleries the Science Center presents touring exhibits from across the country.

Gator-land

• Gatorland has thousands of alligators, crocodiles and other reptiles, some of which perform in daily shows and demonstrations. 

• The "Alligator Jumparoo" show and "Gator Wrestlin'" are two examples. 

• The facility is also home to rare leucistic alligators which are white.

• A small train does rounds on the grounds and an observation tower provides views of the breeding marsh and surrounding region.

• One of the more recent additions to Gatorland is the zip line that runs over top of alligators and crocodiles. 

• For the less adventurous there is still the self guided swamp walk, and kids will enjoy the Gator Gully Splash Park.

This modern museum of Mediterranean

• Sitting on the shore of the Port of Marseille is the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM), a starkly modern cube, connected to the mainland by a skybridge, contained in a swirling concrete cage. And nice area.

• Opened in 2013, the museum seeks to celebrate the various cultures of the Mediterranean in one collection that features both permanent and rotating exhibitions.

• However the art and culture on display inside the museum may be be slightly overshadowed by the ostentatious building it is contained. 

• The main museum building sits in the port like a little island, with a narrow bridge connecting to the historic Fort Saint-Jean, which is also part of the museum. 

• The newer building was designed in an ultra-modern style which allows light to filter in through the porous concrete cube surrounding the center. 

• A roof deck also allows visitors to take in the sun off the Mediterranean.

• The museum has been viewed by some critics as a bit audacious for a facility that is meant to shine a light on cultures that are too rarely distinguished. 

• Unfortunately, the critics may be right as the sight of the bizarrely futuristic building is hard to ignore for the merits inside of it, not to mention its spurious connection to the goals of the museum. 

• With luck, this idiosyncrasy will spur interest in what the building contains.

Oscar Niemeyer Museum

• The Museu Oscar Niemeyer is precariously perched on a massive yellow 60-foot pillar. 

• Impossibly balanced, the museum stares like a bright Cyclops out over a calm reflecting pool, greeting visitors, and daring them to circle their way into the Brazilian gallery.

• Designed by the renowned Brazilian modern architect Oscar Niemeyer, the Museu in Curitiba, Brazil houses many of his works. 

• The gallery, which is also called the Museum of the Eye, was finished in 2002 when the architect was 95 years old.

• It is colorfully painted and often brightly lit at night. Yet still, the amazing balancing act of the 2,000-square foot gallery creates the most powerful spectacle for museum patrons.

• Along with the perched gallery, Niemeyer also built another rectangular gallery on the Museu's large property, which houses a regular rotation of other Brazilian artists’ work. 

• While the works displayed in the galleries are impressive, the building itself is the greatest work of art on display.

• Although the Museum of the Eye is Niemeyer’s most famous and recognized creation, many of his bold and modern works are scattered across Brazil, leaving a striking and influential legacy for others in his field.

Teatro Amazonas Opera House

• Much of the wealth of Manaus came from its days as the region's major port city during the rubber boom. 

• That era was also known for its beautiful architecture - and a fine example of that Belle Epoque style of the late 1800s is Manaus' opera house, the Teatro Amazonas.

• The Teatro Amazonas was built between 1884 and 1896 and is a showcase of furnishings imported from far-off places like France and Italy, including nearly 200 Italian chandeliers and a painted curtain from Paris. 

• The opera house's incredible dome is covered with 36,000 tiles painted in the colors of the Brazilian flag. 

• The first ever performance in the Teatro Amazonas was the opera "La Gioconda" in January of 1897.

• When the rubber boom dwindled, the theater lost its wealthy patrons and actually shut down for 90 years. 

• In 2001 the government invested millions in renovations, and today the 700-seat Teatro Amazonas is home to the Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra and an annual Amazonas Opera Festival. 

• It is on the San Sebastian Square (Praça São Sebastião) in downtown Manaus, and visitors can either go on a guided tour of the theater when it's not in use, or consult the schedule to check out one of the many free performances.
