Alagar Koil

Alagar shrine is constructed with full architecture that completely dedicated to the Lord Vishnu. This temple is located nearly twenty one kilometers from the city of Madurai. This temple beautifully exists above the Alagar hills. Alagar temple is also referred natural beauty of woods. The vaishnava temple is famed for its good-looking sculptures and exquisite ‘Mandapams.’ It is extremely believed seated in the Alagar Kovil from ancient age. According to the Hindu tradition, Lord Vishnu fixed in this place from the heavenly dwelling to afford Goddess Meenakshi who supposed to marry God Sundareswarer. 


Here, God Vishnu resides as Alagar the brother of Goddess Meenakshi. An immense crowd of devotees in seen at this point in the month of April / May in the time of Chithirai festival is renowned. In the time of festival, wedding ceremony of Goddess Meenakshi amman and Lord Sundareswarer give up region and God Alagar that travels to Madurai. The gold processional deity of Alagar and called Sundareswarer and processed by the devotees from the Alagar Kovil to Madurai for the divine wedding function. 

An excellent main temple tower at the entrance has been believed that may constructed by the Pandyan emperors. By the history, Malayadhwaja Pandyan the son of Kulasekhara Pandyan was the earliest known monarch to patronize the temple. Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan beautified the 'vimana' of the place of worship with gold plates. Subsequent to the Pandya rule, the Nayakas patronized the deity.

The foremost deity of this shrine also identified as Paramaswamythe processional idol also called as Alagar or Sundarajan. The astonishing icon is completely made up of pure gold is referred as an exquisite example of craftsmanship. The divine place of Kalyana Sundaravalli is at the southern enclosure the divine consort. The temple is in the north that dedicated to the God Andal. Other vital shrines are sundarshanar and yoga Narasimha.
