Visit the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

The rich jungles of Periyar in Thekkady are one of the world’s most fascinating natural wild life reserves. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The reserve attracts visitors from all over the world. The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park. This is the only sanctuary in India where you can have the experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat on the lake. The greatest attraction here remains the large herds of wild elephants that come down to the lake’s edge.

It is advisable to go on the early morning first boat ride of the day and book the upper deck seats. The boat leaves at 6am or 7am depending on the season. You will most definitely see elephants at the edge of the lake, wild boar, deer and an assortment of birds.  The upper deck is very important for a better view. The boat can get crowded in season so book in advance if possible. Guaranteed sightings of giant Malabar squirrels, assorted deer, and lion tailed macaque, black langurs, huge butterflies like the triodes Minos and a wide variety of birds.

The greenery across the river and the climate is best suited for your trip. Just before the monsoon is the best time to spot wildlife. There are good accommodation and food facilities in this place.

You can plan your trip to this place.
