Pashupathinath temple in Nepal is the most significant Hindu temples of Lord Shiva in the world. It is located on the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu the capital of Nepal. The temple is listed one among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is regarded as the most sacred place of Hindu devotees. The temple is one among the Paadal Petra Sthalams.
Pashupati Temple stands in the center of the town of Deopatan. It is a beautiful temple with richly ornamented gilt and silver-plated doors on all sides.
On both sides of each door are niches of various sizes containing gold-painted images of guardian deities. The sanctum contains a one meter high linga with four faces representing pashupati as well as images of Vishnu, surya, Devi and ganesh.
The chief priest in the temple is called Mool Bhatt or Raval. The other priests are called Bhattas. The chief priest reports to the king of Nepal on a periodic basis.
The temple grounds include many other old and important temples, shrines and statues. In the south of the temple is Chadeshvar and the north of the temple is a Brahma temple. On the south side of the temple is Dharmashila which is a stone where sacred oaths are taken. There are pillars with statues of various Shah Kings.
In the northeast corner of the temple is a small pagoda temple of Vasuki. Vasuki has the form of Naga from the waist upwards. Vasuki took up residence here to protect Pashupati. The Bagmati River which runs next to Pashupati Temple have bathing spots to be used by pilgrims. The preferred bathing spot for women is the Gauri Ghat.
