Backwaters and House boat support tourism in Kerala


     Alapuzha is a town in Alapuzha District of Kerala state. It was described as “Venice of the East” by Lord Curzon. Malayalam is the most spoken language. People understand other languages like English, Hindi and Tamil. Backwaters of Alapuzha are the most popular tourist attraction in Kerala. It is the place where Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on Punnamada Lake. 

    
 Coir is the most important product manufactured in Alapuzha. Kerala government has classified the tourist houseboats as Platinum, Gold and Silver. The boats were used as living quarters by the royalty. Converted to accommodate tourist the houseboats have become floating cottages having sleeping area with western toilets and dinning area on the deck. Most tourists spend the night on the boat.

     

Food is cooked in Kerala style and served hot on the boat. All houseboats have generator and most bedrooms are air-conditioned. The houseboats are built by artisans using Jack wood. The houseboats have a crew of men usually a cook, a guide and oarsman. Boating is very relaxing. They provide best accommodation facility for those who visit here. Boat Races are held on the 2nd Saturday of August. The silent backwaters and coconut trees are best suited for meditation. The greenery and clear nature attracts
                                                       more visitors here. People trade coir,coconut and
                                                       spices here.
