Museum in Goa


Tourist visit Goa mainly for the sun beaches. But it is worth to visit the Museums in Goa. Below listed are few important museums in Goa.

The Archaeological Museum has been functioning since 1964 and is now maintained by the Archaeological survey of India. It is 9 km from panaji and is located in old Goa. It was once the centre of Portuguese domain. Here one can see fortress walls and administrative buildings, the monasteries and impressive churches like the Basilica de Born Jesus which contains the mortal remains of Saint Francis Xavier.



Next is the Goa Daman and Diu Museum. It concentrates on archaeological and archival material. The sculpture collection displays the various Hindu dynasties that once ruled Goa. There is Christian-Portuguese influence in the art, furniture and ivory works.





Next is the Naval Aviation Museum. It is the first naval museum in Asia and was inaugurated at Dabolim, Vasco in 1998. It was opened for public from 19th oct 1998. The museum showcases the history of Indian Naval Aviation, various aircrafts, weapons, sensors, safety equipment and rare photographs depicting Goa’s liberation.

Few other museums are:-
Goa State Museum: 
    It is situated in Panaji the capital city of Goa. The museum is famous for its Hindu and Jain scriptures. Visitors also get to see countless Indian paintings, wooden objects, various manuscripts and anthropological objects. This is a great tourist attraction for both young and old. 

Wax World Museum:
 This museum attracts youngsters. Each figurine in the museum is carefully sculpted of paraffin wax, the hair used is natural although the eyes and teeth are artificial. The museum has over 30 life – size statues. One of the main attractions is the sculpting of last supper. There is a statue called say no drugs which shows the side effects of taking drugs. There is a small gift shop where you can purchase candles of various designs, shapes and smells.


Vintage car Museum :
    It is situated in Panaji – Madgaon highway. It is to spread awareness about vintage cars amongst the youth. Some of the cars restored here are in excellent good condition and can be hired for wedding, movie shoots or for jolly rides. The Ashvek vintage world is also a pioneer in organizing vintage car rallies in Goa. The museum is open for all days from 9 am to 6 pm except Sundays.
